Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education
supporting inclusion, challenging exclusion
lobbying & campaigning for inclusion
CSIE works towards the restructuring of mainstream provision so that all schools are willing and able to include, value and respect all children regardless of ability, ethnic/cultural background or any other differences. With regard to the education of disabled children, often referred to as children with special needs, CSIE campaigns for the gradual closure of all special schools. Informed by the voice of disabled people and by national & international examples of inclusive education, CSIE considers special schooling an anachronistic system which unnecessarily marginalises some children.
Key activities include:
- International work: extensive negotiations, in New York and online, during the drafting of Article 24 (Education) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2004-2006). Further information is available on the CSIE involvement in drafting of UN Convention page.
- contributions to national and international inquiries
- evidence submitted in response to consultations
- briefings in response to government reports or other initiatives
